If I may believe a lot of curlies Kinky Curly provides the better products for curly girls that are also Curly Girl proof. If you’re not yet acquainted with the Curly Girl Method be sure to do a bit of research. My hair has never been better since I started with the method, leaving my hair more moisturized and loads less frizzy.
Already known with the method, but need some help? I suggest reading a lot of articles and finding a CG group to exchange experiences with other curlies!
Kinky Curly Curling Custard product review
The Kinky Curly Curling Custard is a styling product and can be bought online or, like I did, in a Afro cosmetics shop, just around the corner! The store I bought it sold the 8oz variety for 19 EURO.
According to the Kinky Curly website the product should do the following for your hair:
“CURLING CUSTARD TM gives moisture and curl definition, hold and brilliant shiny hair all in one product!
It reduces bulk, defines & elongates your curls helping them to ‘hang’ better. CURLING CUSTARD TM will bring out the natural curl or wave pattern you never knew you had!
It is an advanced botanical formula made with ingredients that nourish and strengthen the hair. Utilizing the humectant properties of the Agave Nectar, CURLING CUSTARD TM will give weight to your hair, define your curls, remove frizz, provide long lasting hold and shine without ever being greasy, crunchy or drying to your hair.
This high performance product is very concentrated so a little goes a long way.”
What I like about the brand is that it’s CG proof and does not contain silicons, drying alcohols and things such as parabens. As an extra it is also cruelty free!
Let me first say that this article is not sponsored. I find out a lot on my own about curly girl products!
Application
First it’s important to know what type of curls you have. If you’d follow the instructions on the pot it says people with really curly hair should use it on soaking wet hair, and wavies on damp. I myself apply all my styling products on soaking wet hair to prevent frizz and I am still a 2 type (2b/2c) which is considered wavy.
Consistancy
The product itself looks like a gel, but feels more like a soft gelly. It’s hard to explain, but isn’t as sticky as a regular gel. It’s more like slippery pudding! Only thing I dont like is that your hands feel greasy and slippery when you touch your hair, even when it is dry. The product is everywhere. I regularly wash my hands when I use it.
Low or high elasticity?
Also did I choose this product because it doesn’t contain protein (besides some Aloe Vera, which can react as protein). My hair has low elasticity, so I use protein free products. If your hair needs protein I recommend this product in combination with protein rich leave-ins of conditioners or just decide it is not for you!
What does it do to my hair?
After applicating it on soaking wet hair, I plopped for 10 minutes as usual and then airdryed my hair. My wurlie hair tends to get less frizzy if I airdry it!
Maybe it’s because I’m used to my ways and apply it to wet hair, but for wavy hair the gel might be to heavy. You can consider to put in less or go for another type of product.
For me: it makes my spirals frizz free, smooth, really soft (it doesn’t leave a really dry cast). With nice clumped curls comes less volume, so I alway shake my hair loose at the top of my head, which does cause a little frizz there. Ofcourse it al depends on what you personally prefer, but next to definition I love volume on my head!
It is recommended to use the Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in before you use this styling product, but since I haven’t had the opportunity yet I used the custard in combination with my leave in black novex, which is very light and seems to be blending fine.
Also after putting it in a loose knot with sleeping it doesn’t hold as much as a stronger gel, which leads to a hard time refreshing the next morning. But because it keeps my hair soft it doesn’t make me wanto wash it real soon and put in a mask and that is certainly a plus!
(Left day 1, right day 2)
Conclusion
Kinky Curly Curling Custard is a beautiful product for defined and frizz free curls! I can see it working beautifully on a type 3a-c! For type 2, just use a little. The price and dirty hands are a downside for me. 19 EURO for 8oz is a lot and I don’t like washing my hands all the time. I am one who flips over a lot. And with a regular gel for 1,90 EURO I get the same results. The huge pro is how it leaves my hair a lot softer!
I hope this Kinky Curly Curling Custard product review was helpful to you <3
